Let our distinctive wooden and routed signs help you stand out

Retailers, restaurants, inns, outfitters, apartments and recreation areas seeking signage that reflects an outdoorsy, nautical or western character will appreciate wooden and routed signs from Signs By Tomorrow Charlotte South.

Many businesses and organizations use them as storefront signs. Carved or routed post-and-panel signs are also popular. Local and state governments often position them at entrances to hiking trails and boat ramps for a rustic look. These signs often are also incorporated into other signage. For example, you’ll often see them as part of monument signs in front of condominium buildings, housing subdivisions or boating marinas.

Of course, the rugged look of routed signs and carved signs isn’t limited to exterior applications. Bars, clothing retailers, eateries, sporting goods stores and others seeking to accent their interior décor with an outdoor, nautical or western theme also rely on these rugged-looking signs.

Select from two basic types: Carved or routed

Carved signs from Signs By Tomorrow Charlotte South feature letters, logos and graphics that are carved by hand or mechanically routed. Your custom design is recessed or indented and sits below the surface of the signage material.

Routed signs are just the opposite. They are created by carving or routing away the background to make the design stand out. This format is known as “bas-relief."

With either technique, you benefit from dimensionality. Unlike two-dimensional signs that feature only height and width, carved or routed signs add an element of depth. 3D signs are naturally more eye-catching and aesthetically appealing than flat alternatives.

Choose from a variety of signage materials

To give you a wide variety of prices and options, Signs By Tomorrow Charlotte South offers carved and routed wooden signs in weather-resistant cedar and redwood.

High-density urethane (HDU) is also a great material for exterior routed signs. Easy to fabricate and weather resistant, HDU does not crack or warp. It accepts paint readily and resembles real wood once finished.

Another popular material choice for outdoor applications? Medium-density overlay or MDO. These readily carved or routed panels feature a paintable or stainable surface. They’re made of plywood with a resin overlay bonded to the wood by heat and pressure. The overlay has a high resin content to resist water, weather and wear.

Enjoy painting, staining and sandblasting options

Carved signs and routed signage from Signs By Tomorrow offers customization opportunities beyond the size, shape and one-of-a-kind logo, letters and graphics you specify. Depending on the material, they also can be:

  • Painted
  • Sandblasted to add texture and character
  • Scorched for a burnt look
  • Stained
  • Unfinished

Many carved or routed signs combine several of the options outlined above. For example, we can paint the letters and stain the background. Of course, a good many others are left unfinished to allow the aging and weathering process to enhance their natural appeal!

Questions & Answers

Are there any limitations to size or shape for these signs?

Not really! Compared to many other options, carved and routed signs are remarkably easy to fabricate.  Don’t be reluctant to go big. And, don’t hesitate to ask your team at Signs By Tomorrow for attention-getting silhouettes. For example, wooden signs, HDU signs and MDO signs cut in the shape of states are possible!
